For the URGENT Attention of School and Nursery Staff

Please see below the advice, and most importantly model letter UNISON has produced regarding the reopening of schools after the Christmas break.

Please accept our apologies for not getting this information to you sooner. Unfortunately due to the number of contractors and different job roles support staff undertake, the legal advice is more complex than that required of unions advising teachers only.

In brief given the exponential rise in COVID-19 infection rates, UNISON believes it isn’t safe to fully reopen schools this week. If schools do open it should only be for vulnerable pupils and children of key workers.

By using the model letter attached within the body of the  “member email” link below, you will be asserting your legal right to be protected against any detrimental action by your employer, including to your pay.

On Monday 4th January in my capacity as a delegate to UNISON’s National Schools Committee, I will be attending an emergency meeting to discuss the current crisis with colleagues across the UK.

My colleague David Padley and I will of course keep you updated, but please bear with us if you are trying to contact us directly.  We make every effort to respond to members without delay, but given the sheer number of queries we are receiving we may not be able to get back to you on the same day.

May I take this opportunity (despite the circumstances) to wish you all a belated but heartfelt Happy New Year.

Kind regards

Lisa Smith –  Education Convenor and UNISON National Schools Committee Delegate

David Padley – Education Convenor
